Bhunath Mukherjee was born on 11th March 1909 at Shantipur Nadia. After passing the Matriculation Examination in 1930, he completed the six year training course in Government school of Art and crafts Calcutta within five years. During this period he received a scholarship from the District Board of Nadia. From his very childhood he engaged himself in the cultivation of culture in the sphere of drawing, paintaing, sculpture, Music, Litarary activities and soecial works. He was the beloved student of Abhinindra Nath Tagore, Nandalal Basu, Mukul Dey, G. Pal and Debi Prasad Roy Chowdhury in painting and sculpture. Being inspired by poet like Karunanidhan Banerjee and Kumud Ranjan Mallick he started litarary activities. Dilip Kumar Roy and Durlov Chandra Bhattacharjee were his instructors in the field of vocal and instrumental Music. In 1941 Sri Mukherjee completed the Art appreciation course from the university of Calcutta. O.C Ganguli, Dr. Kalidas Nag, Maharaja Pradyot Kumar Tagore, Stalakramrish were his teacher during the period. Artist Bhutnath was connected with Sir Ajizul Hauk, Bijoy Prasad Sinha Roy (Minister of Bengal in British India) Mr. Udoy Chand Mahatab (Maharaja of burdwan pandit laxmikanta moitra member of parliament) etc.
Bhunath babu was deeply connected with the Indian Freedom Movement as a Singer of patriotic song under the leadership of Poet Bijoylal Chatterjee.
In 1936 he received Honourable Asutosh Mukherjee Prize from Lord Willingdon the then viceroy of India. Artist Bhunath joined the all India and Burma literary conference at Rangoon in 1937-38 with honourable journalist Ramananda Chatterjee. That time his art works was highly appreciated by the Government and leading intellectuals of Burma.
In 1939 Megaphone record company recorded a song which was composed by Bhunath, one document is available record no. JNG 5402.
Bbunath Mukherjee completed his research work in Royal Academy of Arts London in fine Arts under Sir Gerald Kelly ( President Royal Academy) during this period (1952-54) he received the Honorable Guru Prasanna Ghosh Scholarships of university of Calcutta. In Europe he visited the main Art centers of France, Italy U.K. etc. his lecture was broadcasted from B.B.C. London in 1954.
Sri Mukherjee has mastered in the title Western Art, Indian Art, oil painting, Pastel, Water colour painting, Design commercial art. Chalk charcoal, Pencil in the sphere of painting and clay, Wood, stone, Alloy metal, plaster in the field of sculpture. Sri mukherjee painted the valuable oil paintings of great personalities and some of which are preserved at Assembly house , High Court, Mahajati sadan (Calcutta), Sulekha Works limited, Indian Association Hall, Basumati Bangiya Sahitya Parishad etc. The sculpture work of Sri Mukherjee has been preserved at Ranaghat college, Balananda Brahmachari Asram Deoghar, Bijoygar Kali Bari, Sulekha works Ltd. etc.
Apart from india above, his paintings and sculptures were displayed in several countries in Europe, Africa, China, Burma and New Zealand etc. He was closely association with famous Chinese Artist Zu-peon and Khalsu Nasu of Jahan as student.
For a short time Sri Mukherjee was connected with coal mines board India and Burma to prepare the safety posters for the labours of mines. After that he had appointed as a drawing teacher at keshab-academy school Calcutta. Sri Mukherjee received instruction of Garden planning personally from Rathindranath Tagore at Shantiniketan. Accordingly to the recommendation of Tagore Bhunath Babu complicated the Rock Garden construction project successfully at Daspalla State (odisha) and Baria State Palace (Bombay).
Bhunath Mukherjee has drawn several pencil sketches of various great men such as Rabindranath tagore, Mahatma Gandhi, Sir P C. Roy, Subhas Chandra bose, J. Nehru, Rajendra Prasad, Radha Krishnan, Frontlier Gandhi Abdul Gaffar Khan, Vinoba Bhabe, Sunity Kumar Chatterjee, Satyen Bose, Dalai-Lama, Chou-en-Lai, Ramesh Chandra Majumder, Sir Jadunath Sarkar, Nandalal, Bose, Abanindra nath Tagore, Faiaz Khan, Omkar nath Thakur, DilP Roy, Hemanta Mukherjee, Shyama Prasad Mukherjee, Vivekananda Mukherjee, Tensing Norge, Savarkar, Ahindra Chowdhury, V. V. Giri , Gani Jail Singh, Tarasankar Banerjee, Balai Chand Mukherjee, Shyam Sundar Goswami, Shiba Pada Chatterjee, Bidhan Roy, Sarat Chandra Chatterjee, Muluk Raj Anand, Rajagopal Achariyya, Muzaffar Ahmed, B. T. Randiva, Jyati Basu etc. with autographs.
Bhunath Mukherjee was closely associated with honourable Bijon kumar Mukherjee, S. R. Das, A. N. Roy (Ex chief Justice Supreme Court of India) Sankar Prasad Mitra, Chittatosh Mukherjee and Debi singh (Ex chief justice of Calcutta highcourt) P. C. Sen chief minister of W.B. and other Ministers of W. B. time to time. Biren Roy, Somnath Chatterjee, Krishna Basu, Ram subhak Singh (ex m.p). Swami madhabananda (ex president belurmath) and Swami nittya swarupananda of Belurmath.
Sri Mukherjee is the author of several books like essays on Art, Art teaching method kabya Tarnga ( poem) autographed sketches of intellectuals, collection of coloured sceneries. His eminent student are Dr. Shyam Chand Mukherjee ( Ex-director ) of archhiology W.B. Sachikanta hazari ( Justice Calcutta High Court ), D. N. Mukherjee ( Ex Director) of Industries W.B. His interview was telecasted from T.V. Calcutta on 29.10.1989, 30.10.1995, 04.03.2014. His poems, essays and pictures have been published in a number of Magazines and news papers. Several Art exibhbition of Sri Mukherjee has been organized in Bengal and India. In U. K. and France. Artist Mukherjee has been honoured by several organiston in India and aborad. Several biography of artist mukherjee has been published after his death. His research topic was Influence of human psychology on anatomy of human body through portrait paintaing.
Sri Mukherjee Died on 28.10.1996 at Calcutta.
