Bhutnath Mukherjee was born on 11th March 1909 at Shantipur Nadia. After passing the Matriculation Examination in 1930, he completed the six year training course in Government school of Art and crafts Calcutta within five years. During this period he received a scholarship from the District Board of Nadia. From his very childhood he engaged himself in the cultivation of culture in the sphere of drawing, paintaing, sculpture, Music, Litarary activities and soecial works. He was the beloved student of Abhinindra Nath Tagore, Nandalal Basu, Mukul Dey, G. Pal and Debi Prasad Roy Chowdhury in painting and sculpture. Being inspired by poets like Karunanidhan Banerjee and Kumud Ranjan Mallick he started litarary activities. Dilip Kumar Roy and Durlov Chandra Bhattacharjee were his instructors in the field of vocal and instrumental Music. In 1941 Sri Mukherjee completed the Art appreciation course from the university of Calcutta. O.C Ganguli, Dr. Kalidas Nag, Maharaja Pradyot Kumar Tagore, Stalakramrish were his teachers during that period. Artist Bhutnath was connected with Sir Ajizul Hauk, Bijoy Prasad Sinha Roy (Minister of Bengal in British India) Mr. Udoy Chand Mahatab (Maharaja of burdwan pandit laxmikanta moitra member of parliament) etc.
Sri Mukherjee has mastered in the title Western Art, Indian Art, oil painting, Pastel, Water colour painting, Design commercial art. Chalk charcoal, Pencil in the sphere of painting and clay, Wood, stone, Alloy metal, plaster in the field of sculpture.
Late Bhunath Mukherjee was the second royal academician of London in India. He completed his research work by the help of GURUPRASSANNA GHOSH scholarship of the university of Calcutta. He was mastered in western and Indian art. Apart from design , commercial art , subject picture he devoted himself in portrait painting- the object of his research is to find out the influence of physiology on human anatomy through portrait painting . As a spiritual artist he tried to excavate the original expression of man, both in painting and sculpture work. In the field of scenery he searched the origin of nature – “ WHO IS THE CREATOR OF THE CREATION.”
In the field the painting he followed the formula of color harmony for peaceful coexistence of color in picture ground, and in the sphere of sculpture he avoid hard line for make soft effect of life like expression. In his view the language of art is universal, everybody can follow the voice of art. He also engaged himself of literary activity and music. In those sphere he was faithful to the theory of harmony and peaceful coexistence. Man can uplift himself from the stage of humanity to divinity.
Artist Bhunath was able to ignore the attraction of material prosperity and dedicate his life to the holy flame of cultivation of art for mankind. In his view special importance of art teaching is essential for human society. Sri Mukherjee was enough fortunate to receive blessings and autographs of various great personalities for his Nobel work. শ্রী ঠাকুর সত্যানন্দ দেব বলেছেন "সত্যিকারের শিল্প হচ্ছে সত্য-শিব-সুন্দরের প্রকাশ" I তবে কি আঁধারের পটভূমি থাকবে না আলোকে ফোটাতে ? কিন্তু আঁধারকে পটভূমি করতে গিয়ে যেন আলোকে আড়াল করা না হয় এটি ও লক্ষ্য রাখতে হবে I তাই ঠাকুর তাঁর প্রিয় শিল্পীদের জন্য এই অনুরোধটুকু রেখে গেছেন -" দিব্য শিল্প সৃষ্টি করতে চেষ্টা করো কালির রং বদলে নাও " I শ্রী ঠাকুর এই অনুরোধ যেন মূর্ত হয়ে উঠেছে বরণীয় শিল্পী শ্রী ভুনাথ মুখোপাধ্যায় জীবনে,যার হাত এ আঁকা হলো শ্রী সত্যানন্দ দেব এর এই পূর্ণাঙ্গ তৈলচিত্র I অথচ শ্রী সত্যানন্দ দেব এর স্থূল বিগ্রহ তিনি দর্শন করেন নি I কিন্তু তাতে কি আপ্তবাক্যের মত অপ্রাকৃত দেহ ও যে দেশকালকে অতিক্রম করে আঁকা থাকে দিব্যমনের পটলেখায় I আর ভুনাথ মুখোপাধ্যায় যে দিব্য শিল্পী , তাঁর প্রমান তাঁর ব্যক্তিগত শিল্প জীবন I তাই তাঁর পবিত্র তুলিতে মূর্ত হয়ে উঠলো শ্রী ঠাকুর এর দেহ সুষমা I সে চিত্র -দেহের শ্রীমুখ থেকে শ্রীচরণ পর্যন্ত যে অনবদ্য রূপশ্রী ঝরে পড়ছে , সে শুধু তুলির টানে রঙের খেলা নয়, অনুরাগের কল্প লেখায় অসীম অপরূপ কে রূপায়িত করা I ঠিক যে রূপ আমরা দেখেছি স্থূল চোখে , সেই রূপই আজ প্রতিষ্টা হলো শ্রী সত্যানন্দ দেবায়াতনের পূজাবেদীতে , যাকে দেখতে হলে দুটি চোখের মণিদ্বীপ জ্বালাতে হবে ভক্তির আনন্দ শিখা I প্রার্থনা করি শিল্পীর সার্থক সৃষ্টি যেন শত শত ভক্ত চোখে সেই আলোই জ্বালাতে পারে I আর প্রার্থনা করি শিল্পীর ও অমরত্ব ই I
পারলোকগত ভুঁনাথ মুখোপাধ্যায় যশস্বী চিত্রশিল্পী ছিলেন I তিনি বিশেষ করে প্রতিকৃতি অঙ্কনে অত্যান্ত দক্ষ ছিলেন - তাঁর অঙ্কিত অনেক খ্যাতনামা ও অখ্যাতনামা ব্যক্তির চিত্র আছে I ভুনাথ বাবু আমাদের পিতামহ স্যার আশুতোষ মুখোপাধ্যায় একটি তৈলচিত্র করেছিলেন I ভুনাথ বাবু বর্তমান এ প্রায় বিস্মৃত - তাঁর প্রতিভার যাতার্থ মূল্য হয়নি I আমি প্রত্যাশা করি তাঁর অঙ্কিত ছবিগুলির সংরক্ষণ করা হবে I ভুনাথ বাবু এর স্মৃতির প্রতি শ্রদ্ধা জানাই I
Sri Bhunath Mukherjee was the person who selected me as first in my first art competition. When i got selected in Govt. Art College i realised a gap and weakness in education and to persue for more profound and higher learning i went to Sri Bhunath sir who became my teacher. It was him who taught me how to use the pencil for tonal value rendering , taught me perspective ,proportion, balanced, rhythm. Unfortunately he passed away before i could learn oil painting from him. A wonderful teacher and human being he was not only a great artist but a philosopher, poet, and an excellent exponent of devotional music.
